  • Harrison Clotheir arrived in the region in 1877 as a teacher and went into business with E. G. English, who was a former student. Later, they got recognized as pioneer businessmen and founders of the city. 
  • In November of 1877, a post office got established where Clotheir was appointed the postmaster.
  • On June 27, 1890, the very first general election took place in Mount Vernon for the selection of local officials.
  • July 5, 1893, is when Mount Vernon became officially incorporated.
  • In 1912, the population was listed at 2,600 people by the Sanborn Map Company. 
  • Interstate 5 got built throughout downtown in 1969, which opened up farmlands and severed it from a portion of the residential district.

Looking at significant events, major flooding occurred in Mount Vernon in 1892 and 1894. These floods brought about construction for a sizable levee system here in 1894. Also surrounding these flooding events, homes were constructed on what is known as “the hill” to avoid further catastrophes.
